Out of This World is Lam Tung Pang’s first solo exhibition in Canada, October 24, 2026–January 3, 2027, bringing together work made over the three-and-a-half years since moving from Hong Kong to Richmond. Drawings, paintings, slide projections and video create a site-specific field of light and shadow, juxtaposing empty domestic staircases, rooms, windows and furniture with Canadian road-trip landscapes and outer space. The work explores migration, belonging and the reconstruction of self, moving between familiarity and the unknown. A recurring hand-drawn astronaut reflects movement across countries, cultures and languages, with instability, nostalgia, curiosity and discovery.
Richmond Art Gallery is in Richmond Cultural Centre, 7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond, BC V6Y 1R8. General admission is by donation, with no fixed amount published; everyone is welcome at the opening. Enquiries: 604-247-8363 or gallery@richmond.ca.
His practice has spanned Hong Kong, London, Beijing and Vancouver. Landscapes act as metaphors for a sense of place, from personal memory to national narratives. Inner and outer worlds collide, inviting visitors to recall the comfort of familiarity and the freedom of the unknown. The installation moves through space and time, bringing analog warmth and digital immediacy into an uneasy suspension that unsettles the present. The astronaut stands in for Lam, combining instability, disillusionment, melancholy and nostalgia with transformation, adventure, curiosity and discovery. Shaped but not constrained by politics, geography and history, the work traces a dwelling that is not quite a home, awaiting imagination and invention.
