About this event
“House of Hope” is the name of a Waldorf school in Al-Eizariya, a town in the occupied West Bank near Jerusalem. Founded by Manar and her husband Milad, the elementary school is based on Waldorf educational philosophy and embraces non-violent resistance while supporting children in healing from trauma. Manar tries to provide a safe haven for Palestinian students, though she is finding it increasingly difficult.
Dutch filmmaker Marjolein Busstra began filming her friend Manar in 2022, following her at work and at home with her husband and their two children over the next three years. The film spans the period before, during and after the events of October 7, 2023. It is in Arabic and English with English subtitles and received the HotDocs award for Best International Feature.
The October 16 screening at 6:30 pm is followed by a Zoom Q&A with documentary participants Manar Wahab and Milad Vosgueritchian. The October 19 screening is followed by a Zoom Q&A with director Marjolein Busstra. This screening takes place at VIFF Centre - Lochmaddy Studio Theatre on October 19, 2026, beginning at 8:10 pm.
