About this event
Métis author Willie Poll will lead an informative storytime based on A Salmon Story. Young readers will learn about the life cycle of wild salmon, from fry to spawning adults, and the importance of protecting this keystone species.
The session also considers the threats fish farming poses to salmon habitat and annual migration routes, alongside the advocacy of many Nations for change. Illustrations of salmon will support the discussion.
The event is for Grades 1–3 and addresses salmon, science, conservation, habitat loss and Indigenous stewardship. It connects to Social Studies and Science for Grades 1–3. Presented by Vancouver Writers Fest on Oct. 20, 2026, at 10:15 a.m. Admission is $12.
In-person tickets are sold out. Register for the livestream, or add your school group to the official waitlist. Presented with Talking Stick Festival. Willie Poll is a Métis Nation of Ontario member from Robinson Huron Treaty Territory in Sault Ste. Marie, with over ten years in Indigenous education. She lives on Prince Edward Island on Wabanaki and Mi’kma’ki traditional lands; she holds a BA in Indigenous studies and an MA in archaeology. The NEST is on the third floor at 1398 Cartwright Street, Vancouver. The in-person price does not imply that livestream admission has the same price.
