About this event
Black Boys Code Vancouver’s hands-on LEGO robotics workshop is for boys aged 8–17. Beginners build a two-motor LEGO SPIKE Prime driving robot and learn to use loops to program movement, turns and a square driving path. Advanced learners work with Python, variables, data types, wheel circumference and gear ratios to calibrate a drivetrain for accurate measured travel. Participants also test, debug and evaluate their own and AI-generated code.
The workshop runs October 31 from noon to 3 pm. The organization provides all required materials free of charge: iPads with the LEGO SPIKE app, LEGO SPIKE Prime kits with hubs, motors, sensors, gears and wheels, student workbooks and coding worksheets, and Moodle accounts for assignments, assessments and progress tracking. No equipment or previous robotics experience is required.
Students receive a take-home assignment to reinforce the coding concepts and skills from the session. It can be completed in a web browser without a LEGO kit or robot at home, using any computer or tablet with internet access. Students can submit it through their Moodle account, and an offline alternative is available where needed.
For questions on the day of the workshop, contact Vancouver.ExposureWorkshop@blackboyscode.com or student.help@blackboyscode.com.
