About this event
This digital photography exhibition in the Mezzanine considers the ecosystems and natural elements that sustain life. “Nature Needs Half” is a mantra often used by habitat conservation advocates. Scientists who study ecosystem viability say that approximately 50% of Earth’s land and water resources need to be protected from development or other modification to sustain life as we know it. Human survival depends on functioning ecosystems, including the food web, carbon cycle and hydrologic cycle.
Julian Zelazny describes the photographs as a love letter to these systems and the elements within them that people connect with. The work also recognizes that nature is not sentimental and that people project romantic ideas onto it. Its message is that natural processes are necessary for a functioning ecosystem and the life it supports. The exhibition also reflects on the diversity of life on Earth.
The exhibition is at Place des Arts, Mezzanine, from September 11 to October 20, 2026. It is online from September 18 to October 20. The opening reception is September 11 from 7 to 9 pm. Website: jzelaznyphotography.ca. Instagram: @borealjulian.
