Salmon-Spotting Bike Ride Along Still Creek

Still Moon Arts Society and the Pacific Salmon Foundation present this annual salmon-spotting ride. Participants cycle along the Central Valley Greenway to look for salmon returning to Still Creek after migrating from the Pacific. Riders of all abilities are welcome, though participants should consider whether they can comfortably complete the route. Children with their own bikes may join with adult supervision. Hot drinks are provided. Wear warm layered cycling clothes, gloves and rain gear, and bring a helmet and reusable mug. Salmon costumes or red, green and purple clothing are encouraged. Hot chocolate contains milk.

The ride takes place Sunday, November 1, 2026, from noon to 2 pm. Meet at Beaver Pondering Lodging Sculpture: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3AS654vtF4KWBtEH6). The group will travel from the Rupert area along the Central Valley Greenway to the McDonald's parking lot on Willingdon Ave: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MTNexS6Jovucz6E8A),. From there, participants can return on their own or head back west with the group. The route is shortened this year because of construction on the eastern section of the Greenway. The mostly level route uses separated bike lanes or paths, with several road crossings; it slopes gently downhill eastbound and uphill westbound. Ride leaders are planned for different paces, with a sweep rider at the back. Participants can leave early at Gilmore or Brentwood Town Centre SkyTrain stations. Washrooms are about a two-minute walk from the start and near the endpoint.

At noon, gather at the starting point for a salmon conservation conversation with Pacific Salmon Foundation biologist Sarina Clay-Smith. The ride starts at 12:15 pm and lasts about an hour, with stops along the way. At 1 pm, the group reaches Willingdon Bridge (McDonald's parking lot) for snacks, warm drinks and a salmon and Still Creek Q&A. At 1:30 pm, choose to return independently or ride west with the group; the group is due back at the starting point at 2 pm.
