About this event

Each fall, the City and the Hoy-Scott Watershed Society celebrate the return of salmon to local creeks. Visitors can observe salmon returning to their spawning grounds at Hoy Creek Linear Park, visit the hatchery, see salmon fry, watch a live salmon dissection, and learn about the plants and wildlife of the park.

Other activities include Angela Brown's Nylon Zoo, musical entertainment, the Explore Nature Contest, and conversations with community stewardship groups, the Hoy-Scott Watershed Society, and City Environment and Park Division staff. The event runs from 11 am to 3 pm.

Parking near the trail is limited, so visitors are encouraged to walk or take public transit where possible. Take SkyTrain to Lafarge–Douglas Station, cross Pinetree Way, and follow Guildford Way to the trailhead. On Sundays, free parking is available in the aboveground City staff lot beside Coquitlam City Hall, accessed from Burlington Drive; it is a short walk across Guildford Way to the trail entrance. Additional parking is available in Town Centre Park.

The free event runs October 25, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. The hatchery is within Hoy Creek Linear Park, west of City Centre Aquatic Complex and north of Guildford Way. Walk in along the trails; Princess Crescent is the nearest street and the park has several entrances.

Bears are active in autumn. Stay on trails, follow signs, watch and listen, make noise near streams, and keep dogs on leash. If you see a bear, remain at least 100 metres away; do not run, scream or approach. Speak calmly, back away slowly and warn other visitors. Pack out garbage to avoid attracting wildlife.

Chum generally return from early October to mid-November, and Coho from late October to mid-December; weather can change timing. Watch for bear tracks, droppings, disturbed rocks or clawed trees. If a bear is present, make a wide detour and leave by the route you entered. Enquiries: 604-927-6270 or mlemaire@coquitlam.ca.
