About this event
This event explores how artists build meaningful relationships through community-engaged practice. Joan Williams, Mariel Nelms and Carmen Rosen will discuss how they work with community members to create art and build relationships, including the ethics and logistics of inviting others into an artistic practice.
People working in visual art, performing art, storytelling, photography and other disciplines can bring questions and insights to the discussion. The event also offers opportunities to connect with Surrey artists, community-engaged creatives, and City staff from the Civic Theatres and Community Arts teams, and to learn about City artist opportunities and spaces. Admission is free. Space is limited, and RSVP is required to secure a spot.
Williams is a contemporary Indigenous artist and Semiahmoo First Nation member whose multidisciplinary work includes weaving, drawing and digital arts. Nelms works in participatory art, visual storytelling, photography and material exploration. Rosen is an artist, singer, community organizer and Founding Artistic Director of Still Moon Arts Society; her projects focus on the Still Creek Watershed in her Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood and themes of nature, environmental sustainability, and working with people and community.
The October 21 discussion runs 6–8 pm in Room 401 at Surrey Libraries City Centre Branch, 10350 University Drive. RSVP using the City of Surrey form.
