About this event
This three-session workshop is for people who are brand-new Dungeon Masters (DMs), as well as newer DMs looking for support. Participants practise the different aspects of running encounters, including the basics, managing initiative and surprise, and handling the actions players and monsters can take. Topics also include strategic combat, choosing what different monsters do, managing large groups of enemies or a single powerful monster, pacing, and improvising when players take an unexpected turn.
The group will also explore using the encounter environment to build immersion, inviting players to contribute to the combat narrative, and creating balanced encounters from scratch. Participants can bring specific topics for the group to discuss.
Paper and writing implements are encouraged for note-taking. DMs who already run games are encouraged to bring whatever they use in their DM kit. Arrow Wood Games will provide what new DMs need each evening. At least four players are required for the event to run. Tickets are refundable up to 48 hours before the first session. No outside food or drinks are permitted; snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are available for purchase.
The workshop is suitable for ages 16 and up. The three sessions are October 18, October 25 and November 1, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm each evening. Contact Jen Reilly at 604.390.5009.
