About this event

Learn about Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance form rooted in Tamil Nadu. Rhythmic footwork, sculptural lines, intricate hand gestures, facial expression and storytelling bring together movement, music, rhythm, poetry and theatre. The form moves between nritta (pure dance) and abhinaya (expressive communication of emotion, character and meaning). Through demonstration, conversation and participation, Vidya Kotamraju introduces its movement vocabulary, rhythms, gestures, musicality and expressive language.

Vidya is a Vancouver-based dance artist, choreographer and educator with over three decades of practice. She trained initially with Sheila Jagadish Kumar in India and continued with Jai Govinda in Canada and Bragha Bessell in India. Her work combines traditional repertoire with storytelling, music, theatre, visual art and contemporary ideas. This final session in the series is presented with the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver and Aṣṭa Alliance. October17, 1–2pm at Kitsilano Branch. Advance registration is required through VPL. Current registration is open, with a maximum of five places per booking. Enquiries: info@vpl.ca or 604-331-3603.
