About this event
A local guide leads this two-hour walking tour through historic Gastown, exploring Vancouver’s prohibition era and the stories behind the neighbourhood’s best-known landmarks.
Prohibition came to Vancouver in 1917. Saloon closures pushed drinking underground, while illegal drinking dens, bribery and bootlegging took hold. When the United States followed with its own prohibition three years later, Vancouver rum-runners smuggled liquor down the coast by night. By the 1920s, prostitution, gambling and opium were prevalent in Vancouver. Loggers, sailors and miners arrived from the nearby port, while crime figures Shui Moy and Joe Celona profited.
The tour follows the alleyways and back streets where these events took place. Tickets are CAD 39.00 plus a CAD 0.00 ticket fee for adults, CAD 36.00 plus a CAD 3.67 ticket fee for youth under 18, and CAD 36.00 plus a CAD 0.00 ticket fee for seniors.
