About this event

Sound & Motion is a fundraising art auction presented by Bowen Island Gymnastics Club in partnership with The Hearth Arts on Bowen. Original work takes inspiration from Howe Sound’s ocean, mountains, wildlife, island life and West Coast community. Browse the artwork, meet the artists, hear stories and presentations, and bid on a piece. All art-auction proceeds support the club’s journey to the 2027 World Gymnaestrada in Lisbon, Portugal.

The evening takes place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 6–9 pm at The Bowen Theatre in Bowen Island Community Centre. The ticket page lists all ages and $20 per ticket; artwork purchases through the auction are separate. Any additional taxes or fees are not specified in the advertised price; check the checkout total.

Contributing creators include painters Art by Di, Marie Neys, Diane Buchanan, Katheryn Beals, Liz Watson and Claudia Schaefer; textile artists Krista Hennebury and Sarah Wellman; print artists Michael Epp, Jean Bradbury, Eleanor Rosenberg and Heather Stephens; carver Bob Miller; and jewellery artist Kathy Clarke. More artists and artwork will be added as they are confirmed.

Guest speakers are filmmaker and geoscientist Dr. Bob Turner and explorer and author Kevin Vallely. Turner is a long-time Nexw̱lélexw̱em/Bowen Island resident, former mayor and retired federal geoscientist. His YouTube channel features more than 50 short films about Howe Sound and Salish Sea wildlife and wild places. He helped achieve the Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound Biosphere designation in 2021 and led Bowen Island Conservancy’s 2026 biodiversity-plan development. Vallely is also an award-winning architect and leadership expert, a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and an Explorers Club member. His expeditions include a world-record South Pole trek, an 1,800-kilometre Northwest Passage rowing expedition and a 500-kilometre ski crossing of Ellesmere Island at age 60. He brings lessons about resilience, adaptability and confidence amid uncertainty from extreme environments into leadership and teamwork.

The club has received a 10-minute performance slot at the 2027 World Gymnaestrada, one of only five Canadian teams awarded this opportunity. Participants aged 11–56 have spent years developing choreography inspired by Bowen Island and Howe Sound. Their Magical Ocean Journey connects movement, music, choreography and storytelling with this place. A 12-foot whale puppet handmade by local artists Liz Nankin and Paul Hoosan is a centrepiece and will travel with the team to Portugal. The fundraiser helps make the team’s journey possible.
