Following reports of suspicious activity in residential neighbourhoods, Richmond RCMP are asking the public to take simple steps to protect themselves, their families and their property. Police recommend locking doors and windows, securing sliding doors, balconies and other entry points, and keeping outdoor areas well lit. Residents should keep valuables out of sight, consider using security cameras, and watch for unfamiliar people or vehicles in their neighbourhood.

Apartment residents are reminded not to let unknown people into their buildings. They should make sure common access doors close behind them and prevent vehicles from following them into secured parkades by waiting for the gate to close. Suspicious activity can include unknown people loitering around homes, checking door handles, approaching properties without a legitimate reason, or trying to learn about residents and their personal schedules. Report suspicious activity, behaviour, people or vehicles to police as soon as possible.

Richmond RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Melissa Lui said community safety is a shared responsibility. Simple preventive measures, together with residents staying aware of their surroundings, can help deter crime and keep neighbourhoods safe.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or believes a crime is in progress should call 9-1-1 immediately. Non-emergency incidents can be reported to the RCMP non-emergency line at 604-278-1212.
