As the provincial election approaches, Surrey Now-Leader asked the MLA candidates for Surrey Newton to complete a questionnaire to help voters get to know them. Responses will be posted as they come in.

Candidate: Harman Preet Singh. Party: CentreBC. Singh says he has experience in criminal defence, immigration, administrative law, public policy, technology and business. As a former student member of the KPU Board of Governors representing more than 22,000 students, he gained experience in governance, accountability and strategic decision-making. He says his background combines legal insight and leadership with a commitment to public service.

His three priorities are improving public safety, stopping extortion and supporting law enforcement; ensuring health care keeps pace with Surrey’s growth; and delivering affordable housing, lower living costs and good-paying jobs.

If elected, Singh says he would take Surrey-Newton’s voice to Victoria in his first 100 days and press three priorities: CentreBC’s plan to stop extortion, including an improved anti-extortion task force in Surrey; greater emergency-care capacity, technology, hospital equipment and adequate staffing at Surrey Memorial; and housing policy measured by real affordability, alongside good-paying jobs through more skilled-trades training. He says he would keep listening to residents so solutions are practical.

Singh says Surrey-Newton deserves safer communities and health care that keeps pace with its growth. He asks residents to vote for him, saying he is focused on bringing his experience into public service by listening carefully, understanding the issues that matter to families and businesses, and working toward practical solutions for a stronger, safer and more prosperous Surrey-Newton and British Columbia.

Candidate: Jessie Sunner. Party: BC NDP. Sunner says she is a human rights lawyer, trade unionist and MLA for Surrey-Newton, and that she spent her first term working for families in the community.

Her three priorities are lowering fuel and grocery costs to make life more affordable; protecting ICBC savings and extending the rate freeze; and delivering Surrey’s health-care, school and transit infrastructure projects. In the original response, the rate-freeze and infrastructure points run together without a space.

If re-elected, Sunner says she would focus her first 100 days on results for Surrey families. She would advance her party’s affordability plan by suspending 10 cents per litre of provincial fuel tax and giving the BCUC power to stop gas companies from price gouging; she says this could cut pump prices by up to 30 cents a litre. She would use Price Guard to cap grocery giants’ profit margins on essentials, which she says could save customers up to $700 a year, and extend ICBC’s rate freeze for three years.

Sunner also says she would keep major Surrey projects moving, including a second hospital and cancer centre, an SFU medical school, the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain and new school seats. She says Surrey needs a government that delivers rather than one caught up in chaos. Having grown up in Surrey, she says she knows how long families have waited for the investments now being made. She is running to keep Surrey moving forward, protect progress and ensure families get the future they deserve.

Voters can find Sunner on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok at @jessieksunner or email Jessie.sunner@bcndp.ca.
