West Kelowna RCMP are investigating after a teenage girl reported that she was chased while walking in her community by someone wearing a costume resembling the Cat in the Hat character from a Dr. Seuss book.

Police said the girl reached her residence safely and investigators are working to identify the person involved. Wearing a costume is not itself a criminal offence, RCMP said, but following or pursuing someone in a way that gives them reasonable fear for their safety may constitute criminal harassment, depending on the circumstances and evidence gathered.

Police said other offences, including assault, uttering threats or intimidation, could also be considered if supported by sufficient evidence. West Kelowna RCMP Corporal Gerrits said that following a young person and causing them to fear for their safety is extremely concerning, regardless of whether the conduct was intended as a joke.

RCMP advised parents and youth who are being followed or chased to go to a safe, populated location, contact a trusted adult or call 911 if they are in immediate danger.

The incident has prompted social-media discussion, including suggestions it followed a wave of AI-generated Cat in the Hat hoaxes in the United Kingdom. Anyone with information is asked to contact West Kelowna RCMP investigators at 250-768-2880.
