Eby calls collapsed Canada-U.S. trade talks indefensible
B.C. Premier David Eby says U.S. alcohol will not return to provincial liquor store shelves after Canada-U.S. trade talks collapsed and new tariffs were announced.

B.C. Premier David Eby called the incoming U.S. tariffs “inexplicable and indefensible” after Canada-U.S. trade talks collapsed. Speaking in Vancouver on Aug. 22, Eby said a signed agreement would not necessarily be durable and that no deal was better than a bad one.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will impose dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. The measures are to take effect on the Tuesday after Labour Day, with further details still to come.
Eby said U.S. alcohol products will not return to B.C. Liquor Store shelves. The province’s removal of American alcohol from government stores had been cited by the White House when the tariffs were announced.
