‘A disgusting act’: Burnaby RCMP investigate thefts of gravesite vases
Police say hundreds of bronze vases have been stolen from Burnaby cemeteries over several months, causing thousands of dollars in losses and distress for grieving families. Burnaby RCMP is asking anyone with information to call or email investigators.

Police say hundreds of bronze gravesite vases have been stolen from cemeteries in Burnaby over the past several months, representing thousands of dollars in losses. Burnaby RCMP has set up a dedicated phone line and email address for tips. The thefts are usually discovered during visits to gravesites, police say.
“The exact number of stolen items is unknown,” the RCMP said in a statement Wednesday. The vases are used to leave flowers on loved ones’ graves. Police said some are valued at more than $1,000, but that financial loss pales in comparison with their sentimental value to grieving families.
“Stealing from a final resting place is a disgusting act that causes significant emotional distress to those already dealing with loss,” Cpl. Mike Kalanj said in the statement. He said police are committed to identifying those responsible.
Anyone with information about the thefts can call Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9911 or email E_Burnaby_CemeteryTheft_Tips@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
