Surrey-raised Justin Sourdif signs eight-year, $50.8-million extension with Washington Capitals
The 24-year-old forward, acquired from Florida in 2025, recorded 35 points in 78 games during his 2025-26 rookie season with Washington.

Surrey-raised forward Justin Sourdif has signed an eight-year, $50.8-million contract extension with the Washington Capitals. The NHL club announced the deal Tuesday, Sept. 15. According to PuckPedia, it carries an average annual value of $6.35 million.
The 24-year-old was traded to Washington from the Florida Panthers in 2025. Florida selected him in the third round, 87th overall, in the 2020 NHL draft. In his 2025-26 rookie season with the Capitals, Sourdif had 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points in 78 games.
Capitals general manager Chris Patrick said Sourdif has developed steadily and shown he can fill an important, versatile forward role when given the opportunity. Patrick said the club is pleased to have him under a long-term contract and expects him to continue contributing alongside its veteran core and younger players.
Born in Richmond, Sourdif grew up in Surrey's Boundary Park area. He played at Delta Hockey Academy, later captained the WHL's Vancouver Giants and appeared with the AHL's Charlotte Checkers in the 2025 Calder Cup Final, won by the Abbotsford Canucks. He made his NHL debut with Florida in New Jersey in October 2023.
On Jan. 5, Sourdif scored his first NHL hat trick and added two assists as Washington beat the visiting Anaheim Ducks 7-4. As the NHL begins its 2026-27 season, the contract has drawn attention; hockey insider Frank Seravalli wrote on X that the figure was eye-popping and perhaps the most jarring in the league's new salary-cap environment.
