Vancouver and Bellingham have a distinctive relationship that has grown more complicated as tensions between the regions have risen in recent years. In a recent post on the Bellingham subreddit, residents compared prices and discussed what costs less on either side of the border. One person said an ambulance ride is cheaper in B.C.; in Bellingham and many U.S. states, they said, the bill can “look like a car payment.” A commenter claimed an ambulance trip in B.C. costs only $80, but that applies to people covered by the Medical Services Plan (MSP). BC Emergency Health Services lists a flat fee of $848 for people without MSP coverage.

One commenter said eating out in Canada “feels less expensive,” a view that may surprise people who find Vancouver restaurants costly. Others said Vancouver has better food quality and a wider selection. Another user wrote: “Definitely true. Date night in Canada is a must over current prices down here in the USA.” Someone else said Botox and laser treatments cost far less in White Rock, Surrey and Langley than around Bellingham. A commenter suggested parking in downtown Vancouver is cheaper than in Seattle. One person said they paid $5 to attend a concert and that it would have cost $50 in Seattle. On the other hand, a commenter said real estate is cheaper in Bellingham. Daily Hive said a quick look at listings in both cities supports that comparison.

A decline in visitors from B.C. has had a significant effect on Bellingham’s economy. Many people who used to travel there regularly to shop or spend leisure time are no longer making the trip. The number of visitors has not fallen to zero, but the decrease has hurt the local economy. A recent Bellingham Metro News post said 40 businesses had closed or announced closures in 2026. Owners cited no single cause; fewer Canadian customers were one of several possible factors they identified.

A business owner interviewed by the publication mentioned the long-running jokes about parking lots full of Canadian cars. Daily Hive has reported on similar jokes involving businesses such as Costco and Trader Joe’s. The owner said those cars carried people spending money in Washington. Bellingham Metro News also said Meta’s blocking of news content on Facebook and Instagram has made it harder to reach Canadian readers. The publication wrote: “It has changed how local news can reach audiences just across the border.” A Bellingham business report covered by Daily Hive earlier this year also suggested B.C. and Canada were crucial to the local economy’s survival. A vast majority of respondents in Bellingham’s food and beverage industry said the decline in Canadian visitors had been damaging.
