VanArts closes Vancouver campus; VCC to offer animation programs
The Vancouver Institute of Media Arts has closed its Terminal Avenue campus after more than three decades, while VCC will offer two of its animation programs this fall.

The Vancouver Institute of Media Arts, known as VanArts, has closed its Terminal Avenue campus after more than three decades as a private post-secondary institution.
The school announced the closure on social media Aug. 27, a day before its final day of operations. It said its name and legacy will continue through Vancouver Community College, whose Continuing Studies department will offer VanArts’ 2D Character Animation and 3D Character Animation programs beginning this fall.
VCC said it will also explore additional programming opportunities to meet industry and learner needs. The announcement did not identify other VanArts programs that will continue at the college.
Founded in 1995, VanArts offered programs including professional photography, web development and interactive design, and broadcasting and online media. Its instructors included actor William B. Davis and visual-effects artist Wade Howie, while graduates have worked for companies including Atomic Cartoons and Electronic Arts.
Former students posted messages of disappointment online, recalling the school’s classes, instructors and friendships. VanArts thanked its students, alumni, staff, instructors and industry partners, saying that although its campus has closed, its legacy will remain.
