Cynthia Erivo will make her Vancouver debut Saturday at the Freedom Mobile Arch, backed by 69 musicians from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award-winning performer is expected to appear in a concert running just under two hours.

VSO senior vice-president of artistic and marketing Adrian Fung said the show grew from the orchestra's relationship with the PNE and a shared effort to mount a major orchestral event during the new venue's first season. He described it as a musical collaboration built around Erivo's established symphonic program.

The two-act concert is to open each act with the orchestra and include a medley from Jesus Christ Superstar, according to Fung. The program is also expected to feature Broadway material and covers associated with Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Prince. Erivo performed the title role in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl last summer and recorded Mary Magdalene for an all-female concept album in 2020.

The performance presents a new technical setting for the VSO. Its home venue, the Orpheum, seats about 2,600 people, while the Arch can accommodate 9,000 people beneath a 25-metre-high, 105-metre-wide mass-timber roof. Fung said the sound system must help retain clarity across the orchestra while preserving the warmth of live players in the outdoor space.

The PNE says ticket sales have been strong and only a limited number remain. Creative director Patrick Roberge said the venue's setting, overlooking the North Shore mountains and Burrard Inlet, is central to the kind of experience envisioned for the site. The VSO hopes the concert will introduce new listeners to the orchestra ahead of its 2026-27 season opening Sept. 18.
