Four sentenced in killing of 19-year-old Burnaby man
Four people who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2023 death of Ryan Nagy have received prison terms ranging from six to 10 and a half years.

Four people have been sentenced in connection with the 2023 killing of 19-year-old Ryan Nagy in Burnaby, B.C. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said all four pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received prison terms ranging from six to 10.5 years.
Burnaby RCMP responded shortly after 7 a.m. on June 29, 2023, to a home invasion at a residence in the 7600-block of 17 Avenue. Officers found Nagy with life-threatening injuries, and he died at the scene despite first responders’ efforts. A woman with non-life-threatening injuries was also taken to hospital. IHIT investigated with Burnaby RCMP, forensic investigators and the BC Coroners Service.
The BC Prosecution Service approved manslaughter and forcible-confinement charges against Ali Shamkhi, Rais Usman, Ousmane Keita and Rhoda Diabikulu in September 2024. Shamkhi, who pleaded guilty in October 2025, received a 10.5-year global sentence in March for manslaughter and unrelated firearms offences. A global sentence is one overall sentence for multiple offences rather than separate sentences for each charge.
Usman, also guilty in October 2025, received six years for manslaughter in April. Keita pleaded guilty in March and received six years in June. Diabikulu pleaded guilty to manslaughter in March and was sentenced to seven years on Sept. 1. All received credit for time in custody, and the court imposed lifetime firearms prohibitions and DNA orders.
IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong said the RCMP’s quick response and the subsequent teamwork with IHIT held all four people responsible for Nagy’s death accountable. She extended thoughts to Nagy’s loved ones and the surviving victim.
