More than half of the commercial vehicles inspected in a recent Coquitlam safety blitz were taken out of service for serious safety issues.

Coquitlam RCMP conducted the Commercial Vehicle Safety check on July 29 with the Integrated Road Safety Unit, Langley Township bylaws, Vancouver Police Department, Port Moody Police, New Westminster Police, Coquitlam Bylaws and WorkSafeBC.

Inspectors examined 20 commercial vehicles and placed 12 out of service. They documented 47 defects and issued 17 tickets.

Const. Jennifer Barker of Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services said the joint enforcement effort is intended to promote safe driving, build awareness of vehicle-safety requirements and improve compliance across the Lower Mainland. Police said co-operation with bylaw agencies is important because commercial operators routinely travel between municipalities.
