New school building and classrooms ready for Burnaby students
A new Stride Avenue Community School building and expansions at Brentwood Park and Nelson elementary schools are ready as the 2026-27 school year begins.

Students and staff at three Burnaby elementary schools are returning this fall to a new building or completed expansion. The new Stride Avenue Community School building and expansions at Brentwood Park and Nelson elementary schools are ready for the 2026-27 school year.
Premier David Eby joined a Sept. 1 event at Stride to recognize the projects. Burnaby Board of Education chair Kristin Schnider said the district is grateful for ministry support for the projects, which include learning, child-care and community-serving spaces.
Stride’s seismic replacement building has 415 seats, an Indigenous Hub, before- and after-school child care and space for the StrongStart BC program. It was designed for environmental efficiency to reduce emissions. Nelson’s new prefabricated four-classroom addition provides room for 100 students.
The first phase at Brentwood Park Elementary is expected to be ready early this fall, with seven additional classrooms, a new gym and 165 new seats. A later phase includes a seismic upgrade for the full school and additional child-care space.
Kitchener Elementary’s expansion is also expected to be ready this fall and will create 500 seats. Work began in July on a three-storey replacement school at Cameron Elementary, due for completion in September 2028; it will add 425 seats and raise capacity to 770 students. A 12-classroom, two-storey addition at Alpha Secondary is expected to add 300 spaces by summer 2027.
