The Surrey Historical Society plans to release a book documenting the city’s road names before Surrey adopted a numbered street system in 1957.

Driving in Surrey – A History of Surrey Roads Prior to 1957 is now with the publisher, according to society president Evelyn Wedley, who hopes copies will be ready by Sept. 26. Roads such as Clover Valley, Hall’s Prairie and Latimer once carried names, although some have survived only in historical signs.

The project began after a person in Ireland sought information about a relative who had lived in Surrey and may have been connected to Thomas Road, now 182 Street. Research by Surrey Archives helped identify the person and highlighted how difficult some local history can be to locate, Wedley said.

The launch runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 26 at the 1881 Town Hall on the Museum of Surrey heritage campus. It will include a presentation, displays and refreshments. Residents are also invited to send early driving memories for a draw for a book; attendees are asked to RSVP to eewedley@yahoo.ca.
