Twenty-three new and improved schools are opening in B.C. this September, including a 300-seat addition at Langley Secondary. As families return to school, more student spaces are ready and more are under way to support learning and growth. Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma said the province is investing in schools as more families choose Langley. She said the Langley Secondary addition and upcoming projects at two elementary schools will help provide students with the space and supports they need.

Construction on the Langley Secondary addition began in January 2025. It adds 300 seats in 12 classrooms, including general instruction rooms, foods classrooms, a science lab and special-education rooms. The addition also has energy-efficient mechanical systems designed to improve air quality. The province contributed $27.8 million and the school district contributed $1 million. Langley Board of Education chair Candy Ashdown said the board is grateful to its partners for helping create more spaces where students can learn in a healthy, safe and positive environment and reach their potential.

The province has invested in 14 capital projects in the Langley School District since 2017; nine are complete, including the Langley Secondary addition. Five school capital projects are now under way in Langley. Construction will begin this fall on an addition with 100 seats at Josette Dandurand Elementary, backed by $6 million from the province, and an addition with 200 seats at Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary, backed by $12 million. Both will provide modern learning environments with multiple classrooms and corridors, similar to recently completed projects at Nicomekl Elementary, Lynn Fripps Elementary and Richard Bulpitt Elementary.

Since 2017, the province has approved more than $7 billion to create nearly 50,000 new student seats and almost 40,000 seismically safer seats in B.C. schools. This includes nearly $660 million approved for the Langley School District to create 5,585 new seats and 1,500 seismically safer seats. Across B.C., students are using more than 29,500 new seats and more than 35,000 seismically safer seats. The province says it will continue working with school districts and municipalities as the province grows to provide all students with safe, modern and inspiring places to learn.
