Surrey Police Service investigators believe a shooting outside a Newton home on Aug. 12 was related to extortion, although that assessment could change as the investigation proceeds.

Police were called at about 10:34 a.m. to the 7600-block of 124 Street after the homeowner found what appeared to be gunshot damage to an outbuilding. Officers confirmed the damage was caused by gunfire. The shooting is believed to have happened overnight, and no injuries were reported.

SPS is asking anyone who saw suspicious activity, has dashcam footage or has CCTV video from the area to call its non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file 26-85351 (SP).

As of Aug. 17, Surrey had recorded 138 extortion reports, 22 shootings, two arsons and 74 victims this year. Police say 39 of those victims were repeat victims.
