ICBC plans to replace 140 aging intersection safety cameras across British Columbia as part of an effort to modernize the province’s traffic-camera network. The work will be completed in phases, and ICBC says road users should see minimal impacts.

The B.C. Ministry of Attorney General says the new cameras will use modern technology and will continue to help reduce dangerous driving behaviours, including red-light running and excessive speeding. The program is intended to prevent crashes and improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians throughout the province.

The ministry said camera locations were selected through data analysis of high-risk intersections, identifying places where red-light running and speeding result in the most serious crashes. It said red-light infractions have declined 13 per cent over the past five years.

The existing cameras are reaching the end of their working life. ICBC has selected Canadian company Jenoptik Canada to supply, install and maintain the new cameras for up to 10 years. The new equipment will have higher resolution while retaining enforcement and data capabilities similar to those of the previous cameras.

ICBC told Daily Hive Urbanized that the new cameras will use above-ground detection technology. Older cameras used sensors embedded in the road surface, along with digital imaging, to detect vehicles.

The project will require updates to regulations under the Motor Vehicle Act. About 90 locations will also need minor road or sidewalk work to accommodate new poles and wiring.

The ministry said ICBC’s road-safety investment totals $67 million over the life of the contract, with the contract award posted on the BC Bid website. Traffic offences, fines and penalties will not change. More information on the province’s road-safety plan is available through the BC Road Safety Strategy website.
