Burnaby says hotter, drier summers are increasing wildfire risk, particularly on the steep, forested slopes of Burnaby Mountain and in areas such as Central Park. Mayor Mike Hurley said early detection, rapid response and public preparation will be increasingly important as dry conditions affect more of the city.

The city’s wildfire-detection system includes 45 ground sensors and six smoke-detection cameras. Since it began operating in May 2026, the system has identified 55 potential fire incidents in the surrounding region, according to the city. Burnaby has recorded 168 wildland incidents so far this year, compared with 179 last year; annual totals over the past five years ranged from 136 to 255.

Burnaby has opened Fire Station 8 on Burnaby Mountain and is working with SFU wildfire scientist Dr. Sophie Wilkinson to monitor local weather and soil conditions. A full-scale emergency exercise involving first responders, city departments, SFU and infrastructure operators is planned for 2027.

Residents are asked to check current fire-danger ratings and restrictions at Burnaby.ca/FireSafety before using outdoor cooking equipment. During a high fire-danger rating, only CSA-approved propane or gas appliances are allowed in city outdoor spaces and must be attended. Campfires are never permitted in Burnaby parks.

Anyone who sees smoke or an active fire should call 9-1-1 immediately and provide the clearest possible location without entering a forested area to investigate. The city also advises residents to clear combustible material from around homes, prepare evacuation plans and keep emergency supplies ready.
