Five Canadian business developments to watch in the week ahead

Several trade, financial and corporate developments are expected to shape the Canadian business calendar in the coming week.

Canada's counter-tariffs on nearly $28 billion worth of U.S. products are set to take effect Tuesday. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the tit-for-tat measures after trade talks with the United States broke down last month and the U.S. imposed fresh tariffs on about $28 billion in Canadian goods.

Scotiabank's annual global banking and markets financial summit begins Wednesday. Senior executives from banking and financial services are expected to attend as concerns about the Canadian economy rise amid the escalating trade war with the United States.

Transat A.T. Inc. is to release third-quarter results and hold a Thursday morning call with investors and financial analysts. The company said last month it was discussing possible solutions with the federal government after paying more for jet fuel in the third quarter than ever before because of ripple effects from the Iran war.

Empire Co. Ltd. will release first-quarter results and hold its annual meeting Thursday. The grocer, which operates Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo and Farm Boy, is working to open more stores over the next three years and expand its pharmacy footprint.

Unifor has set Friday as an internal deadline for a tentative agreement with U.S. automaker Stellantis. The union is concerned about the future of the company's Brampton, Ont., assembly plant, which has been idled since 2023.
