A novice driver lost his licence after crashing into a concrete divider on Highway 1 in Langley, B.C., while impaired by alcohol over the weekend, according to police.

Langley RCMP said a witness called at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday after following a Ford Ranger near the 265 Street exit. The caller reported that the truck was swerving and driving on the shoulder. While relaying that information to a police dispatcher, the witness saw the vehicle hit a cement divider and come to rest on the highway shoulder.

The witness captured the crash on dashcam video, which Langley RCMP shared. The video shows the truck striking the barrier before spinning across the roadway.

Police said the 23-year-old driver, a Kamloops resident, failed a roadside impairment test and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impoundment and a $500 fine. Cpl. Mansoor Sahak said police were thankful the driver's trip from Burnaby to Kamloops did not end in a fatality, and thanked the witness who called police. RCMP reminded motorists to call 911 if they suspect another road user is impaired by drugs or alcohol.
