The Metro Vancouver Regional District has issued a yellow air-quality warning for much of the region because of wildfire smoke from the South Cariboo, Southern Interior and Boston Bar wildfire complex.

The warning reflects elevated fine-particulate levels that may pose health concerns. A warning issued Tuesday for the Fraser Valley remains in effect.

The district says a southerly flow brought smoke across much of the region and mixed it down to ground level overnight. Outflow winds are continuing to bring higher smoke concentrations to the eastern Fraser Valley, while southwestern Metro Vancouver and coastal areas are expected to have better air quality.

The warning covers Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, the North Shore, Richmond, Delta, Tsawwassen, the Tri-Cities, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Surrey, Langley, White Rock and the Fraser Valley, including Abbotsford and Mission. The district expects widespread smoke to remain until a stronger onshore flow may bring cleaner air the following day, and advises residents to limit outdoor activity.
