Richmond RCMP has released a short video outlining ways residents can reduce the risk of break-ins. The video advises people to keep doors locked, activate home alarms, avoid hiding keys outside, keep valuables out of sight and make sure security cameras capture clear footage.

Police say radios, televisions or lights can help create the appearance that someone is home and may discourage unwanted entry. Richmond RCMP is asking the public to report suspicious activity immediately, along with all break-ins, attempted break-ins and theft-related incidents.

When reporting a crime, residents are asked to note suspect descriptions, licence plates, direction of travel, security footage or photographs, and the dates and times of observed activity. Cpl. Frank Bryson, Richmond RCMP's media spokesperson, said simple precautions can reduce residents' chances of becoming victims of property crime and help police identify suspects when offences occur.

Anyone who witnesses a crime in progress should call 9-1-1 immediately, police said.
