Richmond RCMP issued a reminder on Oct. 20, 2026, after reports of suspicious individuals in residential neighbourhoods. The detachment says suspicious activity can include unknown people loitering near homes, checking door handles, approaching properties without a legitimate reason, or trying to learn about residents and their schedules.

Police encourage residents to lock doors and windows even when at home; secure sliding doors, balconies and other possible entry points; keep outdoor areas well lit where possible; keep valuables out of sight and consider using security cameras; watch for unfamiliar people or vehicles; and promptly report suspicious activity, behaviour, people or vehicles.

People living in apartment buildings are also asked not to let unknown individuals follow them into secured buildings, to make sure common access doors close properly behind them, and, where possible, to wait until a parkade gate fully closes before driving in so another vehicle cannot follow through.

Cpl. Melissa Lui of Richmond RCMP said community safety is a shared responsibility. She said simple preventive steps, together with awareness of one’s surroundings, can help deter criminal activity and keep neighbourhoods safe.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or believes a crime is in progress should call 9-1-1 immediately. Non-emergency incidents can be reported to the Richmond RCMP non-emergency line at 604-278-1212. The detachment thanked the public for its continued co-operation and commitment to community safety.
