B.C. funds 820 new student spaces, including 300 in Langley
The province is spending $49.5 million on prefabricated school projects that will add 820 student spaces, with two Langley elementary schools receiving 300 seats.
The B.C. government is funding five school additions in four communities, using prefabricated construction to add 820 student spaces and 33 classrooms more quickly.
In Langley, Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary will receive 200 new seats and Josette Dandurand Elementary will receive 100. Other additions are planned for Dormick Park Elementary in Abbotsford, Black Mountain Elementary in Kelowna and Highlands Elementary in North Vancouver, adding 145, 200 and 100 seats respectively.
Lakes Learning Centre in Burns Lake will be replaced to address structural problems in the current building and improve accessibility. The province has committed $49.5 million for the projects.
The province says prefabricated classrooms are permanent structures that meet the same building standards as conventional construction, while allowing projects to be delivered more quickly and at lower cost. Since fall 2023, it has approved nearly $550 million for 44 prefabricated projects expected to create 361 classrooms and almost 9,000 student spaces; 21 additions were in use as of June 2026.
