The Planting Our Roots – Free Tree Project is returning for a third fall season, offering residents a chance to receive a free tree for their property. Since its launch in 2024, the programme has distributed more than 1,250 trees, helping strengthen Delta’s urban tree canopy and enhance local biodiversity.
Mayor George V. Harvie said he was pleased to see the programme continuing to grow and delivering more trees to residents across the community. He said residents have come to look forward to Planting Our Roots each spring and fall, and that it gives them a way to contribute to the urban canopy.
The online registration form will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, and close at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, coinciding with National Tree Day on September 23. Eligible households may submit an entry; 250 recipients will be selected by random draw.
Applicants can rank their preferences from 10 available species. Two are native to B.C.: Garry oak and vine maple. This season’s options are Crested Japanese Cedar, Dawyck Purple European Beech, Desert King Fig, Dura Heat River Birch, Forest Pansy Redbud, Garry Oak, Liberty Apple, Saratoga Maidenhair Tree, Snowcone Japanese Snowbell and Vine Maple.
All recipients will receive planting and care instructions. Residents are responsible for notifying BC 1 Call before digging and ensuring the tree is planted within their property boundaries.
