Federal funding announced for Burke Mountain Community Centre in Coquitlam
The federal government will provide up to $67.46 million toward Coquitlam’s planned Burke Mountain Community Centre, with the city adding $4.6 million from its Housing Accelerator Fund allocation.

The federal government has announced funding of up to $67,463,368 for Coquitlam’s planned Burke Mountain Community Centre through the Direct Delivery stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund. The City of Coquitlam will also allocate $4.6 million from funding it received through the Housing Accelerator Fund.
The centre is planned for the fast-growing Burke Mountain neighbourhood in northeast Coquitlam. It is intended to serve as a hub for the planned Burke Mountain Village Centre and offer recreational, cultural and community services to residents of Burke Mountain and across the city.
Plans include a six-lane lap pool, steam room, sauna, climbing wall, drop slide and double gymnasium. The facility would also include a fitness centre with a weight room and studio space, multipurpose rooms, and a Coquitlam Public Library branch—the city’s first library branch co-located in a community centre.
The centre is being designed to meet the Zero Carbon Building Design Standard, support the city’s greenhouse-gas reduction goals, and include climate-resilient features that could provide refuge during extreme weather, particularly for vulnerable residents. It is also designed to seek Gold certification under the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Rating system.
Funding remains subject to a contribution agreement between the Government of Canada and the recipient, as well as applicable requirements including Indigenous consultation and environmental assessment obligations. Coquitlam has received more than $20.4 million through the Housing Accelerator Fund to date; its housing action plan includes measures to streamline development approvals, improve permitting timelines, encourage missing-middle housing and support gentle density.
