White Rock church group’s yellow duck becomes a summer travel companion
Women in a White Rock church group used a small yellow duck and a WhatsApp chat to share summer trips spanning Europe, Africa and Asia.

Members of a women’s group at White Rock’s Anglican Church of the Holy Trinity found a playful way to stay connected during summer travel: taking bright yellow ducks along and sharing the photos in a WhatsApp chat.
Helen Brown said Susanna Hampton-Thorpe began the tradition by giving a duck to Liz Gaines, the first member planning a trip. Gaines took “Ducky” abroad, prompting Brown and Jan Richardson to bring ducks on their own travels.
Gaines travelled to Africa, Spain and Portugal and went on safari. Brown took a Mediterranean cruise and visited England, while Richardson travelled to Japan. Brown’s duck was photographed in Florence, Rome, Santorini and London.
The group plans to continue sharing duck-travel updates, with possible future trips including Alaska, England and Thailand.
