Olympic gold medallist Meghan Agosta spent Aug. 17 to 21 teaching hockey to girls ages five to 14 at Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex, the first time her academy has been held in Surrey.

The week-long camp included on-ice and off-ice sessions covering skating, shooting, passing, conditioning, structured drills and teamwork. Eight-year-old participant Wren Lilgert said she enjoyed learning from Agosta, playing again with former teammates and being part of an all-girls camp.

Agosta, who now lives in South Surrey, said she encourages young players to try unfamiliar skills, ask questions and not fear failure. She said the program aims to develop players and reinforce leadership and being a good teammate.

Her daughter Chance took part in the camp, while her husband, Jason Robillard, helped lead some off-ice training. Agosta hopes to bring the program back to Surrey next year as a co-ed camp.

Agosta won Olympic gold with Canada in Turin in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, and a silver medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Games. She is also a Vancouver Police officer and has served with the force for more than 12 years.
