Utility poles still taking up road space in east Richmond, residents told
Telus says it is coordinating with Richmond to remove utility poles on Gilley Road, but must wait for another provider’s equipment relocation and intersection work.

Utility poles and concrete blocks on Gilley Road in Richmond’s Hamilton neighbourhood are taking up road space that residents say could otherwise be used for street parking.
Lori Williams told the Richmond News that the poles remain between Westminster Highway and Smith Crescent even though nearby development work and sidewalks appear complete and residents have moved in.
Telus confirmed some wooden poles belong to the company, while others, including some on concrete blocks, belong to another provider. Telus says it is working with the City of Richmond on their removal but is awaiting the relocation of another telecommunications provider’s equipment before it can proceed safely.
A city spokesperson said poles and concrete blocks can be temporary parts of development-related utility work. City engineering staff found the poles on lock blocks had been installed by the developer to support wires while Telus poles await removal.
The city says Telus is also waiting for the developer to finish intersection work at Gilley Road and Westminster Highway. No timeline for completion has been provided.
