RCMP concludes 2024 attempted-murder investigation after suspect found dead
Police say 33-year-old Kalid Yimer was found dead in Surrey in August 2026 and investigators believe he was solely responsible for a 2024 attack that seriously injured a man. The investigation is concluded and the attempted-murder charge has been abated.

The RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) said Oct. 7 that its investigation into a 2024 attempted murder is concluded after police confirmed that 33-year-old Kalid Yimer has died. Investigators believe Yimer was the only person responsible for the Aug. 2, 2024, attack, in which a man was seriously injured after being doused with accelerant and set on fire in the 10200 block of City Parkway. The charge has been abated.
In August 2026, RCMP officers were called to a forested area in Surrey’s Fleetwood neighbourhood to investigate human remains. Police confirmed the deceased was Yimer. They do not believe criminality was involved and do not consider the cause of death suspicious.
Staff Sgt. Tara Nicholls, the non-commissioned officer in charge of the RCMP SPOSU Investigative Services Section, said the goal of an investigation is to find the person or people responsible and hold them to account. While police may never learn the motive for the attack, she said, they hope the victim and community can be assured that police found the person responsible. The victim and family have been told of the update and investigation’s conclusion and continue to ask for privacy. The RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit thanked the community and everyone who assisted.
Background: At about 1:10 p.m. on Aug. 2, 2024, Surrey RCMP received a report of a serious assault in the 10200 block of City Parkway. Front-line officers found the seriously injured victim and took him to hospital. On Aug. 3, the stolen vehicle used by the suspect was recovered with help from the public. On Aug. 9, Surrey RCMP identified Yimer as the suspect, released an enhanced photograph to help locate him and warned the public that police believed he was violent and dangerous.
On Aug. 1, 2025, RCMP SPOSU announced that one count of attempted murder had been approved under section 239(1)(b) of the Criminal Code and that an arrest warrant had been issued for Yimer. Police renewed their appeal for the public to watch for him. The latest update says the charge has been abated following the conclusion of the investigation.
