Road and rail upgrades completed at Surrey port terminals

Road and rail connection upgrades in the Fraser Surrey area have been completed, with the work intended to improve cargo flows through the growing port lands.

The Port of Vancouver facility on the Fraser River handles grain and canola oil exports, containerized cargo and project cargo. Port officials say liquid and dry bulk export volumes through the port have grown by more than 80 per cent since 2021, while container traffic rose by more than 10 per cent in 2025.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s gateway improvement project, developed with industry and government partners, extended Timberland Road South to reduce rail crossings, upgraded several intersections and rail crossings, and added a dedicated inbound lane for container trucks heading to the DP World Fraser Surrey terminal.

The Fraser Surrey Port Lands area includes the DP World Fraser Surrey and Fraser Grain Terminal facilities, along with several port and supply-chain operators. Doug Smith, CEO of DP World in Canada, said efficient road and rail links are essential to reliable cargo movement through the Fraser Surrey terminal and Canada’s supply chains. He said the upgrades will reduce congestion, improve safety and improve the flow of containerized and bulk cargo, helping Canadian exporters reach global markets and supporting continued trade growth through the Port of Vancouver.

A Vancouver Fraser Port Authority release says the new road alignment and rail upgrades opened in spring 2025, more than a year ago, enabling improved cargo movement through the gateway. The project was fully completed by the end of 2025. Video and further project information are available at portvancouver.com.
