Surrey MLA Linda Hepner leaves B.C. Conservative caucus over leadership concerns
Surrey-Serpentine River MLA Linda Hepner says she has resigned from the B.C. Conservative caucus immediately after losing confidence in the party’s leadership.

Surrey-Serpentine River MLA Linda Hepner has resigned from the B.C. Conservative caucus, saying she has lost confidence in the party’s leadership. In a message received by the Surrey Now-Leader, Hepner said her resignation took effect immediately.
Hepner said she remains committed to conservative principles, responsible government and representing British Columbians. However, she said the leadership was unwilling to listen to experienced members or consider perspectives beyond its immediate circle.
She said the removal of former party leader John Rustad, Trevor Halford and Skeena MLA Claire Rattée from caucus brought those concerns to a head. Hepner pointed to Rustad’s history with the party, saying he built it from a single elected member and represents a connection to its grassroots.
Hepner also referred to what she called early hiring disasters and allegations involving a private investigator. Describing herself as a centrist conservative, she said conservatism is strongest when it is practical, reasonable and grounded, rather than defined by growing division.
She said that after decades of public service, she has a responsibility to exercise her own judgment and protect the integrity of the legacy she has worked to build. Hepner said she will continue representing Surrey-Serpentine River constituents and British Columbians with independence, common sense and respect, although her tolerance for the current upheaval has been exhausted.
