VPD warns seniors after 35 distraction thefts reported in 2026
Vancouver Police are urging seniors to protect jewellery and personal space after 35 distraction thefts, with reported losses of $245,000, through July 16.

Vancouver Police are warning seniors about distraction thefts after 35 incidents were reported in the city by July 16, with stolen items valued at $245,000.
Police said 11 of the reports came in June and July. In these thefts, suspects may approach on foot or in a vehicle, distract a victim and use sleight of hand to replace jewellery with fake items. Police said some suspects have pulled jewellery directly from victims who resist.
The 2026 reports included 17 in District 3, nine in District 2, eight in District 4 and one in the downtown core. Vancouver recorded 158 distraction thefts and $364,000 in losses in 2025.
VPD says the suspects are linked to organized crime rings involving Canadian citizens and foreign nationals, who often travel across Canada in rented vehicles. Seniors are advised to conceal valuables, keep strangers outside their personal space and draw attention if they feel unsafe. Victims and witnesses should call 911 immediately.
