Port Coquitlam’s 46th annual Terry Fox Hometown Run will take place Sunday, Sept. 20. The event starts at 10 a.m. at Hyde Creek Recreation Centre, 1379 Laurier Avenue, with registration opening at 8 a.m.

There is no registration fee or minimum donation. Participants may walk, run, skateboard, cycle or rollerblade. The route passes through the community, by the Gateway of Giants sculptures and through the Marathon of Hope in Terry Fox Hometown Square at Port Coquitlam Community Centre before returning to Hyde Creek Recreation Centre. Route information and registration are available at portcoquitlam.ca/terryfox.

Routes will be marked, and volunteers and RCMP will direct traffic at major intersections. Participants are asked to keep right and watch for oncoming vehicles. Laurier Avenue and surrounding streets will be fully closed for the event. Residents are encouraged to avoid driving in the area and remove vehicles from affected streets by 8 a.m. to allow volunteer setup.

From 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the 1300 block of Laurier Avenue, between Hyde Creek Recreation Centre and Coast Meridian Road, will be closed, with no parking on either side. From 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., closures will affect both directions of Coast Meridian Road between Laurier and Kingsway avenues; Coast Meridian Connector north of Tim Horton's, with Tim Horton's access via Lougheed Highway; Coast Meridian Overpass; the 2100-1700 blocks of Kingsway Avenue between Wilson and Broadway avenues, with no parking on either side; the 2100 block of Kelly Avenue between Mary Hill Road and Kingsway Avenue; Mary Hill Road between Wilson and Kelly avenues; and Wilson Avenue between Mary Hill Road and Kingsway Avenue.

Detours and signage will direct drivers to alternate routes. Affected residents will retain home access but may be asked to show a B.C. driver's licence at checkpoints. Access to Manning Square, 3046 Coast Meridian Road and Beaumaris Close will be permitted when it is safe to let traffic through.

The Kingsway entrance to the PCCC parkade and the Wilson Avenue and Kingsway Avenue lots will close from 10 p.m. Saturday until roads reopen Sunday, approximately noon. Mary Hill Road access will remain open all day for parkade traffic only, while the gravel lot across from Wilson and Kingsway avenues will be available for overflow parking. A full parking advisory will be issued closer to the event. With parking limited, participants are encouraged to take transit, walk or cycle. Bus routes and stop locations will change; updates are available at translink.ca/alerts.

The Terry Fox Foundation says it engages more than 20,000 volunteers and 3.3 million students in nearly 10,000 annual fundraising events across Canada. It has raised more than $850 million and funded 1,300 cancer research projects. More information is available at terryfox.org.
