Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is in New York City for media interviews that his office says are intended to promote tariff-free trade with the United States.

In an interview with CNBC on Wednesday morning, Poilievre called for a stronger North America and said Canada and the United States should work together to confront rivalries abroad. Asked whether damage to the Canada-U.S. relationship could be repaired after President Donald Trump’s term ends, he said the countries could work together if the administration wants free trade.

Poilievre also said Canada is already diversifying its trade around the world.

A news release on the U.S. trip says Poilievre plans to honour victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and highlight Canadians’ contributions in the aftermath. His office says he will visit the 9/11 Memorial Museum on Wednesday evening, but will not attend Friday’s New York commemoration ceremony, which is not open to the public.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 10, 2026.
