Retired geologist Bruce Downing runs for Langley City council
Independent candidate Bruce Downing says Langley City needs stronger communication with residents and more timely municipal projects.

Langley City resident and retired geologist Bruce Downing is running as an independent in the Oct. 17 municipal election. He says the city needs an independent councillor who is unaffiliated with either of the two groups seeking election and is willing to voice views that may differ from council members, the mayor and staff while still working with them.
Downing said he has presented to council and staff on a range of topics since 2018, helping shape his platform and key issues. He identified communication between council and residents, and between the City and residents, as a major election issue. He also raised concerns that bureaucracy can delay projects, saying this has been his personal experience.
Since moving to Langley City with his wife in 2016, Downing has challenged the City on issues including sidewalk and pathway safety and natural hazards, such as earthquake risk and fire potential in the Nicomekl flood plain. He belongs to the Langley City Citizens’ Assembly, Nicomekl Enhancement Society, Langley Curling Club and Langley Lawn Bowling Club. His past community roles include ball coach, Kiwanis member, church board chair, Big Brother, and volunteer work at a hospital gala and thrift shop in other communities where he has lived.
