A family evacuated from Okanagan Indian Band Reserve says it has learned its home was destroyed in the Bradley Creek wildfire.

Amber Cardenas said she, four other adults and a toddler fled the property over the weekend. A photo received afterward showed only a flat lot where the home had stood, she said. Cardenas had lived there for about 12 years, and it was her partner’s childhood home.

Officials have asked evacuees for patience as fire crews continue battling the blaze, which grew rapidly in strong winds over very dry terrain. Cardenas said the family left amid dark smoke, roaring winds and the sound of burning ponderosa pines.

The family had previously evacuated during the 2021 White Rock Lake wildfire, when rumours that their home had been lost proved false. This time, Cardenas said, they were unable to save more than a small amount of belongings.

They are staying with relatives in West Kelowna and have received clothing donations through Westbank First Nation. The family has also created a GoFundMe to help with immediate living expenses and eventual rebuilding; it had raised more than $7,200 by Monday evening.
