Most Canadians would support federal intervention to prevent Alberta from separating if the province were to hold a binding referendum, according to a new Research Co. poll.

The online survey of just over 1,000 Canadian adults, conducted July 20 to 22, found 28 per cent of respondents said the federal government should ultimately allow Alberta’s separation. Among Alberta respondents, that figure was 32 per cent.

Canadians were closely divided on whether Alberta voters are likely to compel a binding referendum after the province’s planned non-binding vote: 40 per cent considered it likely and 41 per cent unlikely. In Alberta, 50 per cent expected a later binding referendum, while 30 per cent did not.

Alberta voters are scheduled to take part in a non-binding referendum on immigration, the Constitution and separation on Oct. 19, 2026. Premier Danielle Smith has said she does not support Alberta leaving Canada.

A separate Angus Reid poll in May found 60 per cent of Alberta respondents said they would vote against the separation question, while 35 per cent said they would vote in favour.
