A 17-year-old dirt bike rider died after a collision involving a passenger vehicle near Nanaimo, B.C., on Tuesday. The crash happened in the 2200 block of Extension Road, south of the city. First responders were called just before 6 p.m., Nanaimo RCMP said in a news release Wednesday. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, who was the passenger vehicle’s only occupant, remained at the scene and is co-operating with investigators. Police said alcohol and drugs have been ruled out as contributors to the fatal collision. The release said investigators found no indications of criminality on the driver’s part.
The investigation is continuing. Authorities have gathered dash-camera video and statements from witnesses. In a statement, Insp. Donovan Tait said any loss of life on the roads is tragic, and the death of a young person is particularly heartbreaking. He said the force’s thoughts are with the youth’s family, the driver involved and everyone affected. Tait thanked the witnesses and first responders who assisted at the scene and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve.
